Baroness Lister Speaks at Debate on the Child Poverty Strategy
RAMP Associate Baroness Lister spoke at a Lords Chamber debate on the Child Poverty Strategy following an Oral Question from Baroness Chakrabarti on the progress made on the implementation and outcomes of the Strategy.
Baroness Lister welcomed the strategy’s cross-government approach but raised concerns that Home Office policies on asylum, settlement, and no recourse to public funds could undermine its impact on migrant children. She asked whether the strategy includes migrant children and urged greater efforts to protect them from poverty.
In response, Baroness Sherlock, the Lord’s Minister for Work and Pensions, said the strategy considered all children and recognises that children are not responsible for the circumstances that contribute to poverty. She noted that some support measures depend on immigration status but stated that safety nets exist to help protect children.
