Baroness Lister Raises 28-Day Move-On Period in Debate on National Homelessness Strategy
RAMP Associate Baroness Lister raised the 28-day-move-on period in a Lords Chamber debate on the Government's National Plan to End Homelessness. The debate took place following a question by Lord Bird (Crossbench) on whether new funding allocations to local authorities are sufficient to deliver the prevention commitments in the Plan.
Baroness Lister welcomed the Plan’s acknowledgement that newly recognised refugees face a heightened risk of homelessness when leaving asylum accommodation. She highlighted concerns that the 28-day move-on period is insufficient, citing criticism from local authorities and charities that it contributes to homelessness. She urged the Government to consider restoring the previously piloted 56-day period and to align this change with the broader homelessness strategy.
