Olivia Blake MP Urges Caution Over Divisive Language in Migration Debate

RAMP Principal Olivia Blake was on LBC Radio on the 13th of May to discuss the Prime Minister's recent speech on migration ahead of the release of the immigration White Paper on the 12th of May.

Blake stated that she supported the broader goal of managing immigration effectively but expressed concern that the language used in the Prime Minister's recent speech was divisive. She noted that the term "strangers" has a problematic history and carries connotations that may alienate people, particularly those from migrant backgrounds. Blake reported receiving messages from individuals—both UK-born and migrants—who felt hurt or unwelcome as a result of the phrasing.

She emphasised that political leaders have a responsibility to use language that is inclusive and balanced. While acknowledging that the Prime Minister may not have intended to cause harm, the MP warned of the unintended consequences such language can have, including fostering feelings of exclusion and potentially creating space for far-right extremism. The MP stressed the importance of avoiding rhetoric that could normalise division within political discourse.
